Indian Citation Index launched....

India is contributing good amount of knowledge contents to world literature but there is no tool for evaluation and measurement of its impact, quality and quantity. Accordingly, Indian researchers, scholars, policy makers, decision takers, funding agencies and others too have been facing a big problem to perform/assess the contribution/contributors objectively. At international level few tools/databases like WoS and SCOPUS are available but coverage of Indian knowledge contents in these databases are negligible. Therefore, these tools/databases are not adequate to evaluate/analyze India's knowledge contents.

As is known that to come over such limitation, few of the countries, like China, Korea, Japan etc. have already brought out their own citation indexes for proper evaluation and representation of their R&D contribution. With the same approach and bridge existing gap, I am happy to inform you that the "Indian Citation Index (ICI)" has come in existence for the benefit of R&D community including researchers, planers, decision makers, funding agencies etc. and it is ready/available for users w.e.f. 25th October 2010.

Indian Citation Index (ICI) is a home grown citation database, planned to have multidisciplinary information/knowledge contents from about 1000 top Indian scholarly journals. It provides powerful search engine to perform search and evaluate researchers, policy makers, decision makers, institutions, subjects, city, state etc. Presently, ICI have five years back files data depth of 400 plus journals which would go over to 1000 journals by March/April 2011. ICI is equipped with all major search features including analytics to serve the requirements of users. Also, by the end of December 2010, few more specific and elaborative search features will be in place to meet local needs more specifically.

Indian Citation Index (ICI) is developed by a society named "The Knowledge Foundation" which is fully supported by M/s Divan Enterprise. ICI as a product for sale, distribution, enter into agreements, receive revenue etc is exclusively owned by M/s Divan Enterprise. The ICI may be accessed by its URL: www.indiancitationindex.com.

Report on National Training Workshop on Content Management Systems

Conducted by MyDLIS – SAP, Dept. of Library and Information Science,
University of Mysore, Mysore
August 27 – 29, 2009

The National Workshop on CMS was inaugurated on 27th August 2009 by the honorable Vice-Chancellor Prof. V. G. Talawar. He started his inaugural speech with a punch statement “Knowledge is Dynamic, Information is Dynamic”. In his inaugural address he emphasized that Information professionals like Librarians have to update their knowledge and skills. He said, there are lots of opportunities available for the enthusiastic professionals. He pointed out that agencies like UGC have come out with ideas like Refresher course, UGC-SAP etc. to promote research and the dissemination of knowledge. He urged the professionals to come out of the shells and learn the technology and apply them in the library environment.

Dr. A. R. D. Prasad, DRTC, Bangalore gave the keynote speech. He gave a panoramic view of Content Management Systems. He said that content development is more challenging than software development. It is the content which makes a website more meaningful. Software, he said, is just a tool and not an end in itself. He said Joomla is one of the most popular content management systems. He urged the participants to adopt Open source systems like Joomla. He said, librarians have inherited the skills of information organization; it is the high time that we use them to organize the content on the web for meaningful retrieval.

Prof. P. Venkataramaiah, former Vice-Chancellor, presided over the function. He said information and knowledge are the two major needs for academic community. He said workshop like the present one would equip the knowledge intermediaries like librarians.

Dr. Mallinath Kumbar, welcomed the gathering and Dr. M. Chandrashekara, proposed vote of thanks.

On the first day, 3 sessions were held. The resource person for the 3 sessions was Mr. Anand Kumar Pandey, DRTC, Bangalore. He explained the various terminologies and concepts required to use Joomla. He gave a practical demonstration of the software.

The second and third days sessions were handled by Mr. Praveen Ratna Deepak. He gave a wonderful hands-on experience to all the participants. Particiants appreciated his patience in taking questions, sense of humour and simplicity in his explanation. He covered topics from installation to modules to menus and advanced features. He gave a surprise test and a project. There were 29 participants for the workshop.

The workshop was concluded on 29th August 2009. Dr. Jagadeesh Arora, Director, INFLIBNET;
Dr. E. Ramareddy, Librarian (Retd), Central University, Hyderabad; Dr. Shalini R. Urs, Professor, University of Mysore; and Mr. N.V. Satyanarayana, Managing Director, Informatics India pvt. ltd., were present for a panel discussion. Dr. Shalini R. Urs raised two important questions: Whether the libraries have transcended themselves in to the content management systems? Whether the fundamentals of libraries have changed? The panelists gave their perspectives from their vast experience. The session ended with the distribution of the certificate. Dr. Mallinath Kumbar, Dr. M. Chandrashekara, Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, Dr. H. Adithya Kumari, Dr. R.T.D. Ramesh Gandhi and all the other participants were present.

Barnes & Noble Plans an Extensive E-Bookstore

Four months after acquiring an e-book retailer, Barnes & Noble, the world’s largest chain of bookstores, is starting its own mega e-bookstore on its Web site, BN.com.

In an announcement on Monday, Barnes & Noble said that it would offer more than 700,000 books that could be read on a wide range of devices, including Apple’s iPhone, the BlackBerry and various laptop or desktop computers. When Barnes & Noble acquired Fictionwise in March, that online retailer had about 60,000 books in its catalog.

More than 500,000 of the books now offered electronically on BN.com can be downloaded free, through an agreement with Google to provide electronic versions of public domain books that Google has scanned from university libraries. Sony announced a similar deal in March to offer the public domain books on its Reader device.

Barnes & Noble is promoting its e-bookstore as the world’s largest, an implicit stab at Amazon.com, which offers about 330,000 for its Kindle device. Currently, Google’s public domain books cannot be read on a Kindle.

The number of e-books available on BN.com compares with 1.2 million in stock that can be bought in print form from the company’s Web site.

A further one million books can be ordered from BN.com in the print-on-demand format.

William J. Lynch, president of Barnes & Noble.com, said the company would continue to sell e-book versions of best sellers and new releases — defined as a new e-book for the first six months of its availability — for $9.99. That charge has become the de facto e-book price since Amazon.com set it for Kindle sales.

E-book pricing has become one of the most delicate topics in book circles. Publishers are concerned that by selling new books at such low prices, e-book retailers will undercut sales of hardcover editions, which average about $26, and eventually erode publisher margins.

“The pricing policies won’t remain static,” Mr. Lynch said in an interview. “We’re working with our publishers on various pricing models. As the pricing model evolves over time, we will adjust.”

David Young, chief executive of the Hachette Book Group, the publisher of blockbuster authors like James Patterson and Stephenie Meyer, was cautious about Barnes & Noble’s latest step.

“I’m thrilled that another major player is entering the fast-emerging e-book market,” Mr. Young said. “But I remain deeply concerned that our most valuable front-list titles are being sold at mass-market paperback prices,” he said, referring to the small format paperbacks that usually come out a year after a hardcover is released.

Barnes & Noble also announced an upgraded version of its eReader software that users could download free from its Web site, making it possible to read any e-book bought on BN.com on various devices. Electronic books bought at BN.com cannot be read on Sony’s Reader or on the Kindle.

The retailer also said that when Plastic Logic released its electronic reading device in early 2010, Barnes & Noble would operate a bookstore for e-books that would work on the new device. Mr. Lynch declined to say whether Barnes & Noble would sell the actual device.

Sales of e-books remain small , but are growing fast. According to a survey by the Codex Group, a book marketing research company, 4.9 percent of books sold in May were in digital form, up from 3.7 percent in March.

Sarah Rotman Epps, a media analyst with Forrester Research in Cambridge, Mass., said BN.com was unlikely to dent Amazon.com’s Kindle sales.

“I don’t think they will be stealing market share from Amazon,” Ms. Rotman Epps said. “If anything I think they are contributing to the growth of the whole category of digital reading.”

She added that as more consumers begin reading digital books on phones and other mobile devices, it made sense to market to those readers as opposed to those who are buying dedicated reading devices like the Kindle or the Sony Reader.

LeapFish: Search the best of the web....

Here is a New Search Engine with a difference. LeapFish is a search engine that uses technologies similar to search engines like Dogpile, and according to the developer's with the growth in the Internet and more complex and multi-dimensional ways of finding information, LeapFish comes as a break from the past. The About page of LeapFish Inc. it says that it "Search the Best of the Web in a click free search...utilizes proprietary hyper-threading technology to communicate with all major online portals and their API’s simultaneously to deliver the various search results from across the web to users in a single search query. The engine’s relationships with Google, Yahoo, MSN and others all allow for the use and rapid scale of their public API’s for the creation of our new search portal."

I found the results on LeapFish quite interesting for various search terms. Thanks to JMurali for having mentioned this in his tweet on Twitter.

Well Friends, Today I came across these two Informative and Educative articles, one by Phil Bradley and the other by Charles Knight.

Phil Bradley in his article writes about How to search the Internet without Google and says that, it's certainly possible to search without using Google whereas Charles Knight showcases a list of The Top 100 Alternative Search Engines, April 2007 with monthly updates on ReadWriteWeb.

Melvil Dewey's Book on Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg has now uploaded the Cataloguing scheme of Dewey Decimal Classification written by Melvil Dewey with the following title:
"A Classification and Subject Index for Cataloguing and Arranging the Books and Pamphlets of a Library". This book was published by Melvil Dewey (1851 - 1931) in the year 1876.
One can either read the book online or you can also downloa d the ebook for free from the Project Gutenberg site.
